Istanbul University Alfred Heilbronn Botanical Garden

Botanical garden is a garden for the exhibition and scientific study of collected, growing plants, usually in association with greenhouses, herbariums, laboratories, etc. Also people can visit there.

Alfred Heilbronn Istanbul University Botanical Garden opened in 1935; it is Turkey’s oldest botanical garden.

As a result of Hitler’s regime, some botanists from the rest of the scientists in Germany had to leave Germany. These scientists are Prof. Alfred Heilbronn, Dr. Leo and zoologist Professor Brauner, Dr. Andre Naville. They came to Turkey with invitation of Ataturk in 1933 and they began to give lessons in Biology Institute. Then under the leadership of Prof. Dr Alfred Heilbronn, they started to the establishment of the Istanbul University botanical garden and start working arrangements.

In this botanical garden; there are greenhouses containing tropical plants, open-air venue with a fascinating trip to the area. There are lots of plants which came from many regions of the world and country snowdrops, tulips of Thrace, coffee trees, vanilla, insect traps, banana tree; also it is possible to see examples of plants and trees such as avocado.
